Shanice, Salt & Pepper???!!!!!....................ok now im convinced the world is coming to an end, when these tracks make it onto Deeprhythms mix.
Yo Timo, far be it from me to judge, but i gotta ask, wtf?
Are there no new deephouse tracks coming out these days?

I mean i know its good music and i also use to listen to it back then, i had no choice back then cause it was the only thing we got radio and tv here in SA, he he, but isnt this a Deephouse site?
I mean i have no problem if Mr.Johannsen wants to burn a classic's mix cd for his girlfriend, but does this qualify as deep electronic music?
I am not trying to stir or anything, this is your site and i love it, but i have to know why you decided to put up his mix instead of a deephouse mix.

Wonderful music! By all means an appropriate and welcome excursion from the site's main genre, especially in the guestmixes section. Soulful, mellow summer vibes.
Thank you, Timo and Finn!

I have mixed feelings about this mix (pun intended :-).
Not really my thing, though i have to admit there are some very good tunes with a hammer production inbetween.
A lot of these bring back memories of the early 90s, when I was still following what was
going on on the radio - mostly black music radio of course - like the Family Stand (my favorite of the set, produced by Nellee Hooper of Soul II Soul this is just a CHOON) and the (back then) untouchable Massive Attack as well as Dream Warriors, that Electribe 101 tune is nice and I also had a soft spot for that Quartz tune "It's too late" - I remember having this tune in my ear and not getting it out anymore for months.
So what is the conclusion?
Good mix, but the allover taste is just a bit too mainstreamy and poppy. Shanice in the end does her part to kill the decent impression. Sorry, but it's a personal thing, i find this tune very very corny. And it has been played to death and beyond everywhere, all the time.
I hoped Finn would have contributed one of his _very very good_ house mixes instead.
Anyway, thanks for some good memories and a few great CHOONS!

Hi All,
I understand the feelings regarding this mix. I think one of the things Timo is trying to do is push music with substance and quality. Correct if I am way off Timo? How one quantifies quality is subjective at best, to ones own taste? At any rate the same can be said about Deep House. What makes our version of music deeper versus typical house thus the term Deep House? Granted the mix has some pop appeal but we all were influenced by this music at some point in our lives(maybe). I think it is refreshing to some degree to hear something different. I think it is the attitudes of categorization that has brought deep house or electronic music, or music in general to the point it is today, a point of stagnation (depending on who you ask).
I enjoyed the mix. I do not want to step on anyones toes or anything but I just do not want us to be so close minded about our views of music to the point we pigeon-hole ourselves (in other words kill the progression) I respect all views regarding music and I know what I like and do not like yet at the same time I respect Timo for what he has done on a continued basis and I would not think to be disrespectful if he chose to move in a new direction. As long as the music is good its all deep! Just wanted to add my opinion and I hope my words are not offensive as that was not my intention. Please discuss.
-Thadeep.

My only gripe was the fact that Timo chose to post this mix on a deephouse site, i dont hate this type of music, but for me it just does not qualify as deephouse or even deep electronic music and its defo not underground.
Its just that there are so many new deep underground tracks just waiting to be heard, i mean if i want to listen to Shanice i would go to a commercial site and download it etc., anyways..
I respect Timo and his decisions that he makes concerning his website, i was just suprised to see those tracks and i asked a few questions, but im not gonna lose sleep over this, he he, its just an opinion.

Rez,
I hear ya loud and clear. I know you understand the true deepness, I know this. I give you points about the whole Shanice and Salt N' Pepa bit, it is rather mainstream. I was never a fan of salt n' pepa or shanice. Even years later I understand why I never liked the stuff. However, like anything it has its place? It is good I guess to some degree that this mix shocked most who frequent this site, I think that is a good thing. It keeps us guessing.
Rez, you are a true deep house soldier and have provided so much info and insight to keep this thing we do called "deep house" moving. You have my respect. I value your opinion and I am glad that you shared. Thanks!

I think variety is brilliant, yes you can have it deep all the time, but it gets boring.
Rez, is Deeprhythms.com a deep house site?

Yup, exactly as i said it.
You need variety and the recent shit coming out these days is utterly boring (ok Apparat doesn't count, that whole album was off the scale!!)
I don't subscribe to the deeper than thou, we need deep only camp, hell bring back disco and i'm groovin'
Fuck it, my next mix (when i finally get my decks back) will be a 80's disco one only.

yeah fsck deep house it has been "out" for a long time.
actually it always was. but is this a problem?
if you dont look you wont see.
deepness aint a question of genre. deephousedeeptechnodeepminimaldeepdeepdeepsoul...
its a way of life. the way you perceive and care for music. the way
you are able to make your sacrifice for music.
and there's also deep rock music.
being closed minded is not the point if to try to review this mix.
and i love the genuine form of disco which ultimately led to house music while being mixed with euro-pop.
and i dont hate pop music. i'm socialized by pop and nothing else.
i'm not one of those "i listened to kraftwerk, can, sun-ra and herbie hancock while my mommy was nursing me" types.
if the radio played sally shapiro or apparat (btw thats deep house?) on their rotation i'd gladly tune in.
this mix is very good for what it wants to be: a pop mix. it doesnt want to gather a troop of pimply trainspotters aspirating "ahhh" and "oooh" while they caress their goatbeards.
its more, in this mix, some of the tracks have been played too much during these years, they are not even explicitely commercial but for me giving association of what was playing in a office at that time when the radio was on. today i'd say if they offered a program like this, i'd be convinced to listen to the radio again.
but it's not your set of tunes to go and dig for more but feels more like a take on radio energy (dance oriented commercial radio) in the early nineties.
its certainly an outlier for a mix site like DR but an ok one at that.
oh LOL i wish my mixes would ever get a discussion like that
maybe i should really come around the corner with that long-planned punk mix.

I've been on this site since 2002...and this is one of the best mixes I've ever heard on this site. This one definetely took me back to the early to mid nineties, when I was first getting into all things electronic music. I personally thought the mid nineties R&B and splashes disco added a refreshing touch as well.
BTW..."Josephine" is one of my favorite songs eer.
