Thelonious Funk Sessions #193 Year End Review 2013 [Vol. 5 of 5]

We are finally here with the last show & installment of the Year End Review in 2013. So to kick off the top 20 we have a collaboration that to be honest I would never expect to see all on one song. DJ Qu nailed it big time with a lovely collaboration with Chicago artist Peven Everett & fellow NJ artist Josh Milan of Blaze fame. Legowelt released another album for the 3rd year in a row on Hidden Hawaii sublabel Gilga. The album had a limited pressing of 192 copies & goes for as high as 150 euro. One of the highlight of this solid album makes the cut.

If you feel Legowelt was a busy man, Jamal Moss AKA Hieroglyphic Being has been even busier with a total of 8 albums & 5 EPs in 2013 alone. His untitled track on "The Acid Documents" album makes the list. There are some amazing new talent on the list such as Mod3rn, My Panda Shall Fly, Hound Scales & Breaker 1 2 (yet again). Another collaboration by DJ Spider & Marshallito makes the list again. Kassem Mosse & Mix Mup does a crazy remix of Philip Matalla on Kann Records & Pepe Bradock rounds off the top 20 with a tune from the Acid Test label.

For top 10 I have another tune from the 3rd Testpressing series by Demdike Stare. I must say that it was the best EP of the series to say the least. Terrence Dixon, Pepe Bradock & Joy Orbison makes the list again. Even Joey Anderson makes it on the list remixing Marco Shuttle's Vox Attitude. Spanish producer Developer hits hard with one of the highlight from his Ten compilation on Modularz. This list continues with the emergence of more new talent such as the debuts of Greg Beato & Alex Falk. However but no one (in my humble opinion) has not has such an impressive debut such as the unknown Breaker 1 2.

His Breakin EP on Canadian label Forbidden Planet was a record that caught me off guard. All three tracks made the top 100 on this list but the best track of that EP is DMT & it is my tune of the year. Imagine Omar-S' "Psychotic Photosynthesis" with a darker edge, dirty Middle Eastern synths & laced percussion & you there you have it. Every time I play it creates such a reaction & this quite a weapon of mass destruction. Am I exaggerating? Well according to Juno staff I guess I am not too far off. The entire EP made the top 30 of their 100 EP/tracks of the year.

Thanks again for listening to the series! Have a safe & prosperous New Year & by all means....

Enjoy The Music,

Henderick AKA Thelonious Funk
