#134 MLF for Deeprhythms

Blissed out early morning balearic house and garage vibes from Parisian producer and DJ MLF. Keep an eye on Marie in 2024, lots of good stuff on the way!

Hi there Marie, what’s been keeping you busy lately? Can you introduce yourself briefly to our listeners?

My name is Marie, I produce electronic music for almost five years now (even if I started messing around with DAW at 16) I’m more a producer as I started music at an early age and discover FL Studio and everything starts from there ! I had Ableton but wasnt able to fully use it so fl studio was a game changer to me.

Always wanted to work in the music business also and I’m a financial controller for Universal now as a full time job. I've released a couple of EP and been playing most of it in Paris.

What have been occupied me the last couple of months was the release of my EP on House Of Love a label run by Folamour and preparing for the DGTL which was pretty much my biggest venue ever ahah

I have been working on new songs for 2024 and hope to be able to release them soon ;)

I have been working with a friend on a label more electronic vibe, we are really huge fans of Bizarre Trax and Binary Sound so that we decided to produce a VA on vinyl which will be release soon !

Do you have any fond musical memories from your childhood?

Of course ahah my parents used to have three CDs in the car Madonna “Like a Virgin”, The Police “Outlandos d’Amor” and Abba so really been starting with pop music !!

What drove you to electronic music in the first place?

Honestly I can’t really remember. I used to listen to pretty much everything US rap, pop songs, old rock bands and then drove to electronic. House music was an amazing discovery maybe it was because of the film “Eden” which retrace all the house music evolution in France.

I discover this song “Get Up” by Byron Stingily which was a huge shock at the time. The vocal is so so so groovy with simple drums from 909. And then never quit, after I discover piano house from the early scene in 90s and never been so in connexion with music.

What about DJ’ing, and how did you get started?

I used to play the guitar, piano and the drums but I went to study abroad i couldnt take my instruments. I was studying in a business school and a friend of mine had some controller it started from there ahah playing in students parties mixing commercial pop songs :p

Name a few records or songs that had a big impact on you in your early days and why?

There are soooo many but the song that really marked me is “Big Love” by Pete Heller. I cant say why but the chords, the rythmics really housy is something that has really moved me along the years.

When I’m on a train I used to put this song in loop for like two hours ahah. The vocal is perfect, really adding something special, simple but mooving. Which music is to me, nostalgic but happy too.

Do you have any memorable experiences to share from your early days as a DJ?

I disagree with the approach that you need to be really digging all the time, a while ago someone asks me to play Bob Sinclar, it was really good into that moment and just thought “okay fuck it lets do”. A good song is a good song no matter what and no matter if its popular or no.

You are an avid vinyl fan and record collector. Tell us a little about your collection and how you go about finding records to buy?

I’m digging pretty much on youtube channels and listening all day to soundcloud mixes of people I enjoy, so I spend most of my time digging for the tracks i cannot find on Shazam ahah.

How has your collection expanded over the years - is your approach systematic or organic?

Ahah it is messy, once i digg something I like, I listened to all i can find in the genre, fortunately there are so many good songs it is impossible to listen to everything ! So I guess more systemic

Do you have any good stories to share about the live shows or DJ’ing?

Ahah I don’t know if its a good one, but when i was closing for Folamour, we had a show in Liverpool. I totally cleared the dancefloor from 2000 to 2 people !! Was very hard as I thought i was playing my best tracks ahah

Name three to five secret weapons that you almost every time carry in your bag?

Aguila - Trance Atlantic

2Fabiola - Play this song (Adam & Krimson mix)

IND - We Will rock

What have been your most memorable record finds? Any good stories?

Right now it’s a Corona remix -> Corona - Rhythm of the night (luvdup Tequila on a Spoon Dub). AMAZING SONG

Do you have a comfort record, one you can put on that makes you feel good no matter what?

Every record I have makes me comfortable ahaha but Hi Gloss You’ll never know WOAH

I just need to ask, how’s your vinyl record collection organised?

I am so bad at organising stuff that my record collection is messy as fuck BUT its from left to right : French pop songs - House old school - Piano House - Trancy and to finish electronic only stuff (with big basses ahah)

Name five tracks or releases that are currently on heavy rotation?

All I Need - Michelle Manetti & Demi Riquissimo

Jamie Leather - Dreams

Felon 5 - The Talkbox Track

Morgan page - Outside the City (voltique)

Frisbee - Virtually You

Who are the artists and DJ’s you think deserve more attention than they get currently?

So many good DJs and artists out there Marie Montexier, Jex Opolis, Leo Pol, Vodoos & Taboos, Sweely, Alex Kassian (deserves a Grammy ahah), THC, Byron Yeates,.

Did DJing eventually turn your attention into making music or was it always there right from the beginning?

I kind of had the other way around, I Was producing at first, didnt really like djing ahah so I guess it was there from the start.

How have you evolved as a producer?

I guess I started like so many producers : doing disco and house edits by just adding a kick ahah I was terrible at it because wasnt mastering the sidechain. Then i started to really do chords progression and melodies from my own which allows me to gain in productivity and do something more close to me.

Are there any new tools or musicians or artists who have recently inspired you?

Buying the M1 Plugin was A game changer to me as all the tracks I liked were produce with it !!

Out of your own releases, which do you have the strongest bond with and why is that?

Probably the “Fell in love in a club” song because It has allowed me to tour in Europe with Folamour’s team, and release an EP on his label which was so mooving to me as its someone that had a huge part in my journey through music.

And I started the track because i was rejected so bad in a club by someone, felt like a good revenge on life ahhaha

What does the coming 12 months hold for you in regards of releases, collaborations etc.?

On song on Fauve which is a label run by Romain FX, on song for the Les Yeux Orange’s compilation and hopefully an EP on a label but its not verified yet ! So i don’t want to burn steps ;)

What’s your setup like and how do you work on music (process, themes, details)?

Almost anything, a small keyboard, FL Studio on my mac and my headphones, I always produce with coffee because otherwise I stay in bed ahahah

What’s your take on the current state of electronic music?

It’s really interesting as its evolving a lot. Really feeling a return on 90s vibe which I found interesting ;) Peggy Gou, Boys Noize has sampled a lot of early trancy songs which i found interesting as its started to be more and more popular.

Let’s talk Paris. Can you talk about your beginnings?

The scene is really diverse in Paris and really complete on terms of diversity. I have began by mixing at friends events, and then with my collective “L’appart” we had some opportunities coming up that allowed us to play at Rex Club and invited Manami and Malugi which was kind of an big achievement to us :)

So the mix, can you tell us a little something about that?

I wanted to do a mix that changes from what I usually do. This is more a morning set that you can put while working or after eating at work to not fall asleep but not being in a rave also ;)

Many thanks, anything else?

Thanks for having me !!
